چکیده

An experimental and theoretical study of the fragmentation of plastic materials is presented. In the experiments polyxymethylen particles of spherical shape were fragmented by impacting them against a hard wall. The experiments revealed a power law distribution of fragment masses similar to heterogeneous brittle materials, however, with a significantly lower exponent. To understand the experimental findings a three dimensional discrete element model is introduced. The model discretizes the sample in terms of randomly sized spheres which are connected by elastic beams. To capture the effect of plasticity a novel type of failure criterion is introduced complemented by a healing mechanism of broken particle contacts under compression. Computer simulations show a good quality agreement with the experimental findings.

New universality class for the fragmentation of plastic materials.

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the fragmentation of polymeric materials by impacting polypropylene particles of spherical shape against a hard wall. Experiments reveal a power law mass distribution of fragments with an exponent close to 1.2, which is significantly different from the known exponents of three-dimensional bulk materials. A 3D discrete element model is introduc...

Zipf’s Law and the Universality Class of the Fragmentation Phase Transition

We show that Zipf’s Law for the largest clusters is not valid in an exact sense at the critical point of the fragmentation phase transition, contrary to previous claims. Instead, the extracted distributions of the largest clusters reflects the choice of universality class through the value of the critical exponent τ .

DENDRITE FRAGMENTATION IN THE SHEARED MELT BY FATIGUE EROSION MECHANISM OF SEMISOLID Al-Si ALLOY (A.356.0

Over the last few decades, there have been many mechanisms proposed to describe the formation of the non-dendritic microstructures during Semisolid Metal (SSM) processing; including dendrite fragmentation, spherical growth, cellular growth and recalescence. Dendrite fragmentation is the most popular mechanism of all these hypotheses. It is the purpose of the present article to examine the morph...

Gluonic Pole Matrix Elements and Universality

We investigate the spectral properties of quark-quark-gluon correlators and use this to study gluonic pole matrix elements. Such matrix elements appear in principle both for distribution functions such as the Sivers function and fragmentation functions such as the Collins function. We find that for a large class of spectator models, the contribution of the gluonic pole matrix element for fragme...

Evolution of the average avalanche shape with the universality class

A multitude of systems ranging from the Barkhausen effect in ferromagnetic materials to plastic deformation and earthquakes respond to slow external driving by exhibiting intermittent, scale-free avalanche dynamics or crackling noise. The avalanches are power-law distributed in size, and have a typical average shape: these are the two most important signatures of avalanching systems. Here we sh...
